BREATHTAKING BACKSPLASHES

A backsplash is one of the final elements selected for a kitchen, but it can have a significant effect on the completed design.

Whether you prefer something subdued and classic or more distinctive and modern, the backsplash brings the cabinetry and countertops together while introducing colour, pattern or texture into the room.

Calgary Kitchen Restyling supplies and coordinates backsplashes as part of our complete kitchen renovations, cabinet refacing projects, and Beautifully Blended Kitchens. We do not provide backsplash replacement as a standalone service.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BACKSPLASH

The backsplash should complement the kitchen without competing with the cabinetry and countertop.

If the countertop has strong colour or movement, a quieter backsplash may create better balance. When the cabinetry and countertop are more understated, the backsplash can become an opportunity to introduce pattern, texture or a stronger design feature.

The tile’s size, shape, colour, finish and installation pattern all influence how it will appear across a larger area. Grout colour can create contrast and emphasize the pattern or blend with the tile for a softer appearance.

Viewing the backsplash alongside the actual cabinet and countertop samples helps ensure the materials work together before the final selection is made.

MATERIAL AND DESIGN OPTIONS

Tile remains the most common backsplash material and is available in a wide range of colours, sizes, shapes and finishes.

A traditional subway tile can create a clean, timeless look, while handmade, textured, or patterned tiles can add more character. Larger-format tiles can reduce the number of grout lines and provide a simpler, more continuous surface.

Quartz or stone can also be extended from the countertop onto the wall. A slab backsplash creates fewer visual breaks and can produce a strong, cohesive appearance, particularly behind a range or across a feature wall.

The right option depends on the overall kitchen design, the amount of backsplash area and the desired project investment.

PLANNING THE DETAILS

Backsplash planning includes more than choosing a tile.

The height of the backsplash, placement of patterns and cuts, grout colour, cabinet clearances and transitions around windows must all be considered. Electrical outlets and switches can also affect the finished appearance, particularly when using patterned tile or large-format materials.

The area behind the range may be kept consistent with the rest of the backsplash or designed as a feature. Either approach should feel connected to the cabinetry, countertop and overall character of the kitchen.

Wall preparation, repairs and painting may also be required as part of completing the space. Calgary Kitchen Restyling can coordinate wall and ceiling painting when it is included within the larger kitchen project.

common questions

CAN CALGARY KITCHEN RESTYLING REPLACE ONLY MY BACKSPLASH?

No. We supply and coordinate backsplashes as part of a complete kitchen renovation, cabinet refacing project or Beautifully Blended Kitchen.

WHEN SHOULD THE BACKSPLASH BE SELECTED?

The backsplash is usually easier to finalize after the cabinetry and countertop have been selected. This allows the colour, pattern and texture to be considered alongside the kitchen’s larger visual elements.

SHOULD THE GROUT MATCH THE TILE?

It depends on the desired appearance. Matching grout creates a quieter, more continuous surface, while contrasting grout emphasizes the tile shape and installation pattern.

CAN THE COUNTERTOP MATERIAL BE USED AS THE BACKSPLASH?

In many kitchens, yes. Quartz, granite or quartzite may be extended onto the wall as a short backsplash, full-height backsplash or feature behind the range.

CAN THE BACKSPLASH GO TO THE CEILING?

Yes, depending on the layout and selected material. Extending tile or slab material to the ceiling can create a strong feature around a range hood, open shelves or window.
